Breaking News – China kicked off military drill ahead of UN court ruling
Early Tuesday morning, China kicked start a week long military drills in the South China sea ahead of the July 12th UN Tribunal court ruling over a long-standing territorial dispute between the Philippines and China. Several guided missiles destroyers and frigates are deployed to the region including the Shenyang and Ningbo destroyers and the Chaozshou frigate.
The drill is conducted within a massive area of 100 000 square kilometers from Hainan island to Paracel island. Beijing said no foreign ships would be allowed in this area. However the prohibited area would not affect the high-traffic shipping lanes that carry some $5 trillion yearly trade.
Chinese expert said the exercises were partly a response to recent US manoeuvres in the region and partly an attempt to show China’s resolve to the world ahead of next Tuesday’s ruling. U.S Navy has deployed a large scale military asset in the region, including E/A-18 growler and the joint force of the 3rd and the 7th fleet.
The Chinese defence’s ministry criticise U.S action in the region, and said that it’s a miscalculation and can destabilise the regional peace and stability. China will safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. China claims sovereignty over huge swaths of the resource-rich South China Sea, within what it calls the “nine-dash line”, but next week’s ruling may call into question the legal legitimacy of those claims.
