Breaking News – Indonesia Seized Chinese Fishing Vessel in South China Sea
On May 30th 2016, an Indonesian frigate intercepted a Chinese fishing trawler near the Natuna islands. The water is in the Indonesian’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The navy fired direct shots at the trawler and hit the stern of the fishing vessel, after the Chinese trawler refused to stop fishing in Indonesian waters. It seized the vessel and its eight crew members. No one was injured during the stand-off.
The Indonesian spokesman Major Budi Amin said that the arrest was made to show the world that Indonesia will take firm action against ships that violate its territory. And that Indonesia followed standard international procedures in dealing with foreign ships entering its territory, including providing warnings with flags, voices and warning shots.
Chinese reaction is somehow neutral. China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that China and Indonesian, have a high degree of consensus on dealing with maritime dispute, through dialogue and that both countries are willing to remain in close touch about this.
For the second time in a matter of months, China has protested Indonesia’s seizure of a boat and the detention of its Chinese crew for what Jakarta claims is illegal fishing off its Natuna Islands waters
