Iran manager Carlos Queiroz has hit out at VAR after referee Enrique Caceres decided against sending Cristiano Ronaldo off for apparently elbowing Morteza Pouraliganji. Ronaldo was eventually shown a yellow for the clumsy incident but Iran’s Portuguese manager was less than happy with the outcome on Monday evening. The former Portugal boss insisted that the system needs to be more transparent after it dominated the headlines after the game. ‘In the rules, an elbow is a red card, it doesn’t matter if it’s Lionel Messi or Ronaldo,’ said Queiroz, who complained that VAR decisions were not transparent. ‘We need to know what’s going on and nobody allows me to see,’ he said. ‘You have one system which costs a fortune…and nobody takes responsibility. When there is a decision with VAR, we need to know who is refereeing the game.’ VAR was once again in the spotlight with Cristiano Ronaldo awarded a penalty after referee Caceres had a second look at Pouraliganji’s clumsy challenge in the second half. Ronaldo saw his spot-kick saved by Ali Beiranvand but the biggest controversy was the handball call, which gave Karim Ansarifard the chance to equalise from the spot. That goal cancelled out a superb strike from Ricardo Quaresma on the stroke of half-time, which ultimately saw Portugal through to a second-round meeting with Uruguay while group winners Spain face Russia.
