A big fire ravaged the Museum of the Portuguese Language in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday, partly damaging the historic building and claiming the life of one firefighter, said local authorities.
The fire broke out from inside the museum Monday afternoon. More than 100 firefighters and 60 fire engines were deployed to fight the fire. It took them nearly three hours to put out the fire.
Built in 2006, the museum if the world’s first and only museum designed for documenting Portuguese language.
“Today’s fire is a huge disaster for Sao Paulo. The Museum of the Portuguese Language is very significant in both Brazil and in the international world and it’s very important to the city of Sao Paulo,” said Nabil Bonduki, Municipal Secretary of Culture of Sao Paulo.
“Here I want to thank the fire department which deployed 60 fire engines and 102 firefighters to control the fire. We can say that with their absolute conviction, they have expressed love of the people in Sao Paulo, and even across Brazil towards the popular museum because the museum translates the soul of the Brazilian people,” said Geraldo Alckmin, governor of Sao Paulo.
