In direct contravention of the rules of Taiwanese broadcasting, a major cable TV provider – Taiwan Broadband Communications – cut transmission of FTV”s news channel this morning following a breakdown in negotiations over payments. It was the first time for a television channel to be pulled over such a dispute since Taiwan”s broadcasting watchdog, the National Communications Commission, was established 12 years ago. As negotiations over content authorization fees soured between FTV and cable TV provider TBC, TBC suddenly cut transmission of FTV’s news channel in the early hours of this morning affecting around 750,000 households including 250,000 in southern Taoyuan.Cheng Wen-tsanTaoyuan MayorI think just arbitrarily cutting transmission is wrong. I think the NCC must intervene and standards must be applied both to the cable operator and to the station. The operator’s decision to cut the broadcast was particularly wrong. Cable TV operators have the right to control which channels they broadcast; but TBC’s complete neglect of the public’s viewing rights has drawn condemnation from all quarters. Huang Kuo-shuDPP LegislatorI think it is very, very, regrettable because FTV news is one of the most popular news programs in Taichung City, there are a vast amount of viewers. Hung Tzu-yungNPP LegislatorI hope the NCC will not behave just as a mediator – it should take proactive action. I think we should not let consumers see on TV a sign saying that they can’t view this channel and please go to another one. In the eyes of the Taiwanese people, FTV of course is a native Taiwanese TV station. It represents native Taiwanese voices and most people accept this. Therefore we are also very unhappy to see this situation develop. This is the first time a major channel has been pulled off the air since the NCC was set up. Legislators and local leaders are calling on the Commission to fix the problem swiftly.
