China’s special envoy to Pyongyang is back in Beijing this morning following his four-day trip to the North.
He spent time with some high-level officials, but we still have no confirmation on whether Song Tao met with the regime’s leader, Kim Jong-un.
Experts say that, if there was no such interaction,… that would raise a number of serious questions.

On Monday evening, Beijing’s special envoy to Pyongyang, Song Tao returned after a 4-day visit.
But details on whether he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have not been clarified yet.
China’s state news agency, Xinhua, reported that Song met with leaders of North Korea’s Workers’ Party and carried out his official remit to brief the regime on China’s recent Communist Party Congress.
Upon the confirmation that Chinese President Xi Jingpin won a second term, North Korea reportedly congratulated China and wished its closest ally further success under the Xi’s leadership.
The news outlet also said the two sides exchanged views on issues on the Korean peninsula, and pledged to strengthen bilateral relations.
North Korea watchers had suggested the envoy’s visit may have intended to carry a message from Beijing encouraging the regime to get back on the path to reopening talks, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent state visit to Beijing.
However, if Kim Jong-un did look to avoid such a conversation, it would have broken formalities with previous instances of when such envoys were received.

“After the 17th and 18th Party Congresses, Beijing sent special envoys who did meet with Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un respectively. Both times they stayed one night and two days, but it seems this time for various reasons the visit has been longer.”
North Korean state media did report that Song met with high-ranking officials Choe Ryong-hae and Ri Su-yong during the visit, and also paid respects to former North Korean leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il at a mausoleum in Pyongyang where their embalmed bodies are housed.
But, if it is confirmed that Beijing’s envoy did not meet Kim Jong-un, then this could indicate a distancing in relationship between the two allies, and a lack of progress in getting North Korea back to talks.
