Breaking News – China Monitor The South China Sea With GAOFEN-3 Satellite

China launched new advanced satellite, GAOFEN-3 into orbit to protect its maritime interest, amid growing tension over territorial dispute in the South China Sea. China plan to use this satellite to monitor the marine environment, islands and reef, inbound and outbound ships as well as its oil rigs.

On August 10th, 2016, a long March 4C rocket lifted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center at 6:55 p.m. Eastern time and placed the Gaofen-3 satellite into orbit. The GAOFEN-3 or High-Resolution 3 satellite has a radar system capable of capturing images from space with a resolution down to 1 metre, and can operate in all weathers. It can takes wide picture of the Earth and capture detailed pictures of specific areas around the clock. The new satellite has a designed lifespan of eight years and will mainly be used by the State Oceanic Administration of China.
China launched the Gaofen project in May 2010 and has listed it as one of the 16 national important projects in science and technology. The project aims to form a space-based, high-resolution Earth observation network.

The first in the system, Gaofen-1, was sent into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China in April 2013. Another four Gaofen satellites were launched in 2014 and 2015.
China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Vietnam, China and Taiwan claim all of the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea, while the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei claim some of the area.
