England and Spain deserve credit for creating a fine spectacle in the UEFA Nations League, according to Jamie Carragher. Former Three Lions defender Carragher was thrilled with the quality of football on display as Gareth Southgate’s men won 3-2 in Seville on Monday night. Carragher believes the game was the perfect advert for UEFA’s new international tournament and compared the match to a Champions League event. Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: ‘That is one of the best international games I have seen in a long time. It was like watching a Champions League game. ‘This game is a massive statement for the tournament we are playing in now. Plenty of people have ridiculed this tournament including Premier League managers.’ Carragher reserved special praise for England, who were 3-0 up by half-time thanks to two goals from Raheem Sterling and one for Marcus Rashford. Despite conceding twice in the second period — to Rodrigo and Sergio Ramos — Carragher claimed that this Three Lions display was their best since September 2001’s famous 5-1 win over Germany in Munich. He added: ‘Credit to both sides but particularly to England. The only thing that can match tonight is maybe Germany 5-1. This is a game that those players will never forget. ‘What that says, watching England is like watching the best teams in the Premier League. They play the way the top teams in the world play. ‘The best way to describe it was a great away Champions League performance like our teams in Europe. Champions League, not a boring international like we see too often.’ England’s win and three away goals — which gave them the edge against Spain in their head to head — gave Southgate’s men hope of qualifying for the semi-finals. In order to progress to the next stage of the Nations League, England need to beat Croatia on November 18 and hope that their opponents can get at least a draw against Spain three days earlier.
