March 9th 2016, United States fly 3 B-2 Spirit bombers to Asia-Pacific region. Their mission is to conduct training with allies and partner amid rising tensions with China military build-up in the South China Sea, and the North Korea short range missile test.
The B2-Spirit is an American most advanced heavy penetration strategic stealth bomber, designed to penetrate dense anti-aircraft defences. It is capable of deploying up to 40,000lb of ordnance, both conventional and thermonuclear weapons. Each unit costs around $1 billion dollars. 21 units are built for United States Air Force. It is capable of all-altitude attack missions up to 50,000 feet, with a range of more than 7,000 miles (11,000 km) on internal fuel and over 12,000 miles (19,000 km) with one mid-air refuelling.
The deployment is also part of effort of the United States Pivot Asia Strategy. Maritime Asia is a vital thruway for global commerce, and it is a critical part of the region’s expected economic growth. Eight of the world’s 10 busiest container ports are in the Asia-Pacific region, and almost 30 percent of the world’s maritime trade transits the South China Sea annually. The Department of Defence, in conjunction with inter-agency partners, regional institutions, and regional allies and partners, is working to ensure that the rule of law – not coercion and force – dictate maritime Asia’s future.
