Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported earlier this week that police officials in China’s westernmost province of Xinjiang have ordered families to turn in their Qurans, claiming that the sacred Islamic text contains “extremist content.”

This comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s “Muslim Ban,” in which he bans travel from seven terrorist infested countries flagged by the Obama administration. Many have cried foul play, accusing governments of singling out Islam and treating Muslims unfairly, but others believe that the precautions are necessary.

Xinjiang is known for its Muslim separatist movement, and the Chinese government has had problems with them in the past. According to Chinese officials, numerous Muslims from that region had previously traveled to the Middle East in order to join the Islamic State.

In response to this, the Communist Party has significantly cracked down on public displays of faith, particularly for Islam. No longer will Muslims be allowed to publicly fast during Ramadan, wear burqas on public transportation, or carry a Quran out in public.

Radio Free Asia reports:

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered ethnic minority Muslim families to hand in religious items including prayer mats and copies of the Quran to the authorities, RFA has learned.
Officials across Xinjiang have been warning neighborhoods and mosques that ethnic minority Uyghur, Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslims must hand in the items or face harsh punishment if they are found later, sources in the region said.
“Officials at village, township and county level are confiscating all Qurans and the special mats used for namaaz[prayer],” a Kazakh source in Altay prefecture, near the border with Kazakhstan told RFA on Wednesday.

He also added that “Pretty much every household has a Quran, and prayer mats,” meaning that the Chinese government ban would affect numerous families. Dilxat Raxit, spokesperson for the exile World Uyghur Congress Group, said that other areas are following suit.

“We received a notification saying that every single ethnic Uyghur must hand in any Islam-related items from their own home, including Qurans, prayers and anything else bearing the symbols of religion,” Raxit said. He claims that if they aren’t handed in voluntarily, and the Chinese government finds them, there will be harsh punishments.

Breitbart also adds that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied this report as “groundless allegations and rumors,” when asked about whether they were confiscating Islamic items.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied the report as “groundless allegations and rumors.” Asked about claims that Chinese police were confiscating prayer materials, spokesman Lu Kang told reporters, “We hope relevant parties refrain from making groundless allegations and rumours,” adding that the situation on the ground in Xinjiang was “sound.”
On Friday, the Chinese state media outlet Xinhua published a story on life in Xinjiang not designated a response to the RFA article, but apparently meant to dispel the appearances that police did not allow Uighurs to live in their territory and practice their culture peacefully.
The article, titled “Live the real life of Uygurs in a Xinjiang resort,” highlights Kazanqi, a village that allows tourists to live among the Uighur people as colleagues, eat local foods, and enjoy traditional music. The article does not mention Muslims or Islam at all, despite the fact that most Uighurs are practicing Muslims.

Amidst rising global backlash to Muslim migrants, many are caught up in the mix wondering where to stand. America is a country of freedoms, and one of those freedoms allows us to practice whatever religion we wish—but with the problem of Islamic extremism, how far do we draw the line?
