Indonesian President Joko Widodo has visited the Natuna Islands amid rising tension over recent clashes between the Indonesian navy and Chinese fishing boats in the area.
The president, accompanied by the foreign and defense ministers and the armed forces chief, visited the islands in the South China Sea on Thursday in an apparent move to emphasize sovereignty over the area.
Joko inspected activities of Indonesian naval ships in waters around the islands and ordered the military to step up patrolling.
Indonesia’s navy has seized a number of Chinese fishing boats in the exclusive economic zone off the Natuna Islands since March.
The Chinese government protested the action, saying the waters around the Natuna Islands are historically that country’s fishing grounds. China claims jurisdiction over almost the entire South China Sea.
Indonesian authorities have seized fishing boats from Vietnam and the Philippines as well.
But they are paying more attention to Chinese boats which they suspect of illegal catches of fish in the area under the protection of China’s patrol ships.
The Indonesian government plans to send fighter aircraft and submarines to the Natuna Islands as part of strengthened defenses for the remote islands.
