China’s foreign ministry said on Thursday (May 8) that it was “not familiar with the matter” when asked whether Chinese jets were involved in the India-Pakistan conflict after India hit Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir with missiles the day before.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was speaking at a regular media briefing in Beijing.
Speaking ahead of a planned trade meeting with the U.S. on Saturday (May 10), Lin said China’s “resolve to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests will not change”, nor will its commitment to “upholding international fairness and justice”.
The spokesperson also said China opposed a recent joint sea and air patrol by the Philippines, the U.S. and Australia in the South China Sea.
China is committed to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, said Lin, while urging “relevant countries to stop forming blocs and stirring up trouble in the South China Sea.”
