Tokyo 2020: Olympics in Fukushima
Hi everyone, I’m Hanae Nojiri, a newscaster for Fukushima Central Television. I’ve been reporting on Fukushima’s reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred in 2011. As the Tokyo Olympics are known as the “Reconstruction Olympics”, I wanted to show our reconstruction to the world. However, the games are being held without spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “So, I’d like to tell current Fukushima where Olympics started, please check it out!”

“Due to the influence of COVID-19, these games do not feel like the “Reconstruction Olympics,” as we had hoped…”
On the second day of the games, the Japanese national softball team faced Mexico in Fukushima. Originally, because of these games, many spectators from all over the world would have visited Fukushima.
Mr. Serikawa had been expecting to let the visitors know the current state of Fukushima, where reconstruction is ongoing, by serving them by his taste. However, now that that is not possible, he just prays for the victory of the Japanese team, in hopes that it will call the world’s attention to Fukushima.
Mr. Serikawa watches over the game from the kitchen. It seems that his prayers worked; Japan won!

“It was great! I’m so happy that I was moved to tears. The game was amazing.”
“Japan won two consecutive games in Fukushima. Maybe these are the “Reconstruction Olympics” after all?”
The Japanese softball team has injected energy to Fukushima, aiding in its continuous efforts to move forward.
