In an age where it seems everybody shares their lives on social media, for one U.S. startup, not enough people are. But Flipagram – based in Los Angeles – has just been acquired by a huge Chinese news company.

Because in a world dominated by the likes of these kind of apps, Flipagram has been struggling to gain popularity.

What Flipagram does is to take a bunch of users’ pictures and then turns them into little movies with music underneath them to share to social media.

But it needs to grow its user base – and that’s not easy in a saturated market.

“They’ve had really tough competition with deep pockets – namely Snapchat and Instagram,” said Garrett Reim, a tech reporter of Los Angeles Business Journal.

And now, this Los Angeles startup is becoming part of a Chinese family. The app has been acquired by giant news service, Toutiao, for an undisclosed amount in early February.

In fact, just six months ago, it’s reported that Flipagram was looking around for a buyer.

Facebook, Google and others were silent. But it went further afield, to China.

“I think they can learn a lot. Toutiao has a news recommendation feature that is pretty sophisticated and it can be used by them to recommend user content within their own app. So feeding people content they might be interested in. And then it might help them further expand in China,” said Reim.

For Flipagram, it’s about reinvention, a new picture. Just look at Snapchat – how its morphed from a photo sharing app to so much more.

As for how a new social media app catches the imagination and makes itself relevant, Garrett Reim made some suggestions.

“It’s certainly tough. There are dozens coming every week. But a new company generally has to have a feature that sets it apart. That really engages people. For Snapchat, it was photos that disappeared. For Instagram, that was filters, you can put on your photos.” said the tech reporter.

For Flipagram, the dream of entering the leagues of Instagram and Snapchat is starting to become a reality.
