Seven letter bombs mailed from Egypt to the U-S were discovered Thursday in the office of an Arabic newspaper, at a post office handling the paper’s mail and at the federal penitentiary.

None of the bombs, however, exploded and no one was injured.

The FBI are treating it as terrorism , but have no suspects.

The upper floors of the National Press Building in Washington D-C were evacuated Thursday upon the discovery of five letter bombs.

Police and the FBI were soon on the scene to remove the bombs from the building.

Mailed from Egypt, the bombs were discovered in the office of the Arabic newspaper “Al Hayat”, an Arabic newspaper owned by the Saudi royal family.

The first two bombs found at “Al Hayat” were discovered Thursday morning by an employee who started to open the letters and suspected a bomb.

As police investigated those bombs, another batch of mail was delivered in the afternoon. The same employee noticed an envelope that looked similar and called police.

Another letter bomb was found at a post office handling the paper’s mail and yet another at the federal penitentiary in Kansas.

Early this morning, two letter bombs were found here at the National Press building at a publication known as Al Hayat which is located on the 11th floor. At about three o’clock this afternoon, more mail was delivered to the same publication — two additional letter bombs were found.

The FBI warned people receiving similar cards to use extreme caution, not handle the envelopes and contact police or their local FBI office.

Police said the bombs were strong enough to kill.

Q: Could you tell us how strong they were?
A: We cannot discuss the composition of the bomb, but pertinent to our ongoing investigation, I will say that they could kill.

The bombs were disguised as holiday cards, however none of them exploded and no one was injured.

All seven bombs had the same type of postmark, address and format.

The FBI said they were postmarked from Alexandria, Egypt, in plain, white, 5 1/2 by 6 1/2 envelopes with computer-generated addresses and no return addresses.

The FBI are said to have no suspects but is mobilising its legal attache based in Cairo and its terrorism task force in Washington.

It was a letter addressed to “Al Hayat” at the same address. It fit the same description as the previous four that were delivered today, so we believe this is again one in the same.

Police said they are intercepting and examining all mail addressed to Al Hayat.

Al Hayat is known for the wide range of opinion presented in its pages and because of this some journalists believe it will be difficult to find who might be responsible.
