陸上自衛隊による国内最大の実弾射撃演習「富士総合火力演習」が行われた。中国の海洋進出を背景に、６年連続で「離島防衛」がテーマとなっている。
演習では、ヘリコプターから隊員や車両が降ろされ、素早く展開し、戦車による砲撃などで離島を奪回する作戦の様子などが公開された。約２３００人の自衛隊員が参加し、約３６トン、２億９０００万円分の弾薬が使用された。
また、陸上自衛隊が尖閣諸島など南西諸島の防衛力を強化するため新たに導入する「水陸両用車」や、従来の主力戦車と同様の射撃能力を持ちながら最高時速１００キロで走行できる新型の「機動戦闘車」が、実際に走行する様子が初めて公開された。
