また討論会では前原氏、枝野氏ともに社会保障政策を充実させていく考えを強調した。一方でその財源となる消費税率の引き上げについて、前原氏が枝野氏に「財源論は先送りと言ったが、党の考え方を見直すのか」とただしたのに対し、枝野氏は「財源論から逃げるべきではないが、いま消費税を上げられる状況ではない」と述べるなど、主張は真っ向から対立している。
また、野党共闘について、条件付きで前向きな姿勢を示している枝野氏だが、すでに共産党が候補を立てている新潟５区の補選については、民進党として独自の候補を立てるべきと述べた。
