日本時間２２日未明、アメリカで９９年ぶりとなる「皆既日食」が観測される。西海岸から東海岸まで横断するのが特徴で、世界各地から人が集まり、早くも盛り上がりをみせている。
皆既日食は月の陰に太陽が完全に隠れる現象。ワイオミング州の人口約１万人の町・ジャクソンには１５万人が日食を見に集まると予想されていて、中には日本から訪れキャンピングカーで観測する家族もいる。

日本で前回皆既日食が観測されたのは２００９年７月だが、今回はアメリカ本土を西から東へ横断するのが特徴で、９９年ぶりの天文ショーとなる。
