*According to Chinas Shenzhen News, Geely has inked a deal with Ford to purchase the Volvo brand. Citing unnamed government officials, the Chinese news outlet said an initial agreement is in place, although several details such as transfer of technology were still under negotiation. Under the terms of the deal Geely will reportedly invest up to $10 billion in the Volvo brand, including moving most of the Swedish automakers design and production operations to China. The next-generation XC90 due out sometime around 2011 could be the first Geely-penned Volvo model. However, Shenzhen News report should be taken with a grain of salt. Chinese news outlets arent exactly known for their accuracy and several other Chinese automakers such as Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corporation (BAIC) have been named as potential Volvo buyers.

中国紙の毎日経済新聞は１７日付で、中国の地場自動車メーカー、吉利汽車（浙江省）が、米自動車大手フォード・モーター傘下のスウェーデンの高級車ブランド「ボルボ」を買収することでフォードと暫定合意し、買収後の人員整理や技術移転などについて協議に入っていると伝えた。買収が実現すれば、広東省東莞市に工場をつくり、ボルボのスポーツ用多目的車（ＳＵＶ）の生産を始める計画という。吉利汽車は中国の代表的な地場メーカーの一つで、３月にはオーストラリアの変速機メーカーの買収を発表している。 ボルボを巡っては、これまで大手の北京や長安、奇瑞など国内の有名自動車メーカーによる買収話がたびたび持ち上がっている。世界の自動車業界の再編で中国企業が台風の目となってきた。
