A Chinese space station is expected to crash to the surface of the Earth in the next few months.
Tiangong-1 or Heavenly Palace lab, launched in 2011, was part of an ambitious plan of China to become a space superpower.
Used for both manned and unmanned missions, it was visited by China’s first female astronaut Liu Yang.
But, in 2016, Chinese officials confirmed that they had lost control of the space station.
China’s space agency recently notified the UN that it expects Tiangong-1 to come down between October 2017 and April 2018.
Since then, the station’s orbit has been steadily decreasing. In the recent weeks, it started falling faster.
Commenting on this, Jonathan McDowell, a renowned astrophysicist from Harvard University, said that the rate of decay is getting higher now that Tiangong-1 is in denser atmosphere.
Though much of the craft is expected to burn up, McDowell stated that few parts, weighing up to 100 kg, might crash into the Earth.
