People in Spain expressed their appreciation for the country’s doctors and nurses on Saturday night to thank them for their efforts in battling the novel coronavirus.
Residents of apartment blocks in Madrid and Barcelona appeared on their balconies and applauded. A team of doctors and nurses at a hospital in Madrid even stepped out to enjoy the moment.
The tribute came in response to calls on social media for people to express their appreciation to Spain’s medical professionals.
It was inspired by a similar event in Italy, with organisers scheduling it to take place at 10pm.
It followed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s nationally televised address where he detailed a raft of exceptional measures to combat the spread of the virus.
