８月２１～２４日に沖縄県石垣市で開かれる「全国離島交流中学生野球大会」（通称・離島甲子園）に向け、佐渡市の選抜チームが練習を始めた。長打力のある打線に加え、左右の投手がそろい戦力が充実。佐渡勢として初の優勝を狙う。
大会は島外との練習機会が少ない離島の球児に試合機会を与えることや、野球を通じた人材を育成するのが目的。「マサカリ投法」で知られる元ロッテの村田兆治さん（６７）が提唱したのがきっかけで始まり、今回が１０回目。１０都県から２２チームが出場する。佐渡勢は地元開催だった２０１４年に佐和田中、１６年に選抜チームがそれぞれ４強入りしたのが最高で、まだ優勝したことはない。
６月に選考会を行い、島内７校から３年生１８人が選ばれた。打線は各校で４番を務める選手が集まり、長打力に優れる。ともに力のある直球が武器の右腕・池野蒼祈さん（１４）＝佐和田＝と左腕・橋本玲音さん（１４）＝金井＝を中心に、堅い守りで無失点を目指す。精鋭を率いる本間悟監督（５４）＝佐和田中教諭＝は「優秀な選手がそろったが、一つにまとまらなければ勝てない。チームプレーを磨いていきたい」と話す。
８日に佐渡市金井新保の金井運動公園野球場で行われた初練習では、キャッチボール、ノック、バッティング練習などで汗を流した。初めて顔を合わせた選手たちは連係を磨こうと、互いに声を掛け合い練習を盛り上げていた。今後は週に１回ほど集まり、本番に向けて調整を重ねていく。
主将の岩崎紀尚さん＝佐和田＝は「良い雰囲気で練習ができた。佐渡勢として初の決勝に進み、必ず勝ちたい」と決意を語った。
